Rotational & Regenerative Grazing: A Path to Biblical Land Stewardship

Clun Forest Sheep at Legacy Family Farms

A Hardy British Heritage Breed

Clun Forest sheep originated in the rugged hills along the border of England and Wales, in an area known as the Clun Forest in Shropshire. For centuries shepherds in this region bred sheep that could thrive in steep terrain, harsh weather, and sparse forage. The result was a hardy, adaptable breed known for its strong maternal instincts, efficient grazing ability, and excellent meat quality.

These traits made Clun Forest sheep one of Britain’s most respected traditional breeds, and today they continue to be valued by farmers who focus on pasture-based and sustainable livestock systems.

Built for the Pasture

One of the reasons we chose Clun Forest sheep at Legacy Family Farms is their ability to thrive on grass-based systems. They are efficient grazers that do well in rotational grazing programs and help maintain healthy pasture ecosystems.

Clun Forest sheep are known for:

• Strong maternal instincts and good lambing success

• Excellent adaptability to a wide range of climates

• Efficient forage conversion on pasture

• Calm temperament and easy flock management

These qualities make them a great fit for farms that prioritize natural grazing and regenerative land stewardship.

A Versatile and Productive Breed

Clun Forest sheep have long been valued as a triple-purpose breed, providing wool, meat, and milk.

Wool

Their dense fleece produces a durable medium wool often used in textiles, yarn, and traditional fiber crafts.

Meat

Clun Forest lamb is known for being lean, flavorful, and well-balanced, making it a favorite among many shepherds and chefs.

Milk

While not primarily a dairy breed, their milk is rich and well suited for small-scale cheese and culinary uses.

Preserving Agricultural Heritage

Clun Forest sheep represent generations of practical breeding and traditional livestock management. Their history is closely tied to the shepherds who relied on them in the challenging landscapes of the British Isles.

At Legacy Family Farms, raising this breed is about more than production. It’s about preserving a heritage breed that thrives in pasture-based systems and fits naturally into a sustainable farming approach.

By stewarding these sheep, we hope to honor that history while producing high-quality farm products for our community.
